We’re obsessed with bread, more especially a fresh, out of the oven roll. These rolls are not only perfect for making burgers, they’re great for breakfast, spread with butter or jam.

These rolls are not only perfect for making burgers, they’re great for breakfast, spread with butter or jam.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk

  • 1 large egg

  • 1/4 cup butter

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 packet instant yeast

  • 3 cups flour

  • Oil for the bowl

Directions

  • In a jug, whisk the warm milk, yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Cover and allow to sit for 5 minutes.
  • Add the remaining sugar, egg, butter, salt and 1 cup flour. Mix until combined.
  • Now add the remaining flour and mix until combined.
  • Remove the dough from the bowl and place it on a lightly floured surface. Knead for 10 minutes.
  • Lightly grease a large bowl with oil. Place the dough in the bowl and cover with a clean kitchen cloth. Place bowl in a warm area and allow to rise for 1 hour.
  • Grease a baking pan.
  • When the dough is ready, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 14-16 equal pieces. Now shape each piece into a smooth ball.
  • Place the shaped rolls into the greased baking pan and cover with a clean kitchen cloth. Cover with a kitchen cloth, or clingwrap and place in a warm area to rise for 1 hour.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown on top in a preheated oven of 180°C.
  • Remove from the oven and lightly brush the tops with melted butter
  • Eat right away or rewarm before serving.
